It Is Up To You

A human being, as he is, is not perfect. That is why he is seeking perfection. A human being is such that he appears and disappears and dies. Therefore, he is not perfect. So perfect will be that which is Unborn, Undying, Unchanging. Where is that? A human being has never seen it. But I say that you can see it. You have the power, you have the understanding, you can see it. But you don’t accept that you have the power. You can see that which is Unborn, Undying, Unchanging. But you are established in, “No, I cannot.” That means that you are always appreciating your weakness or unknowingness, and you are saying that, “No, I am such that I cannot see that which is Unborn, Unchanging, Undying.”

Therefore some of you, or many of you, must be brave enough to know that “I should examine this.” But you can only examine it when you get the information. And that information is not available. … All is being known, but that is not known which is Unborn, Undying, Unchanging and is always with you—which means you are That. Therefore I would like to give you the information, which you would always like to have. Let us see if it is worthwhile, then we can try to practise it. But the moment I say it is Unborn, Unchanging, Undying, as a human being, your mind immediately comes that, “I cannot believe in this. I cannot know it. This is not my field of knowledge. My field of knowledge is only name and some form.” You deny that Unborn, Unchanging, Undying. Therefore, I’ll only take a few minutes and give you a trial and test of yourself. Try and see if you have the ability to know it.

You can close your eyes for a few minutes, which I say that you have the power to do. Those who cannot, should not, or they should do whatever they want to. But I have said that you have the power to close your eyes. So those who have, close your eyes. Immediately after closing your eyes, you will see no form that is born. That form which is not born is not going to die. That form, whatever you are seeing, has not come from Manali, England, America, or Canada. You have just closed your eyes and began to watch. So what has happened? The Watcher, the Knower, appeared. Now you have come to know. …

I have brought you towards watching your own victory. If you think that the body is there and it is defeated by death, then the body is defeated. If you know that the Space you are experiencing cannot be defeated by fire, water, air or by any weapons, that this Space is and it is You, that it never dies, then you know that this is Unborn, Unchanging, Undying. For your hearing sake I say Pure, Free, Forever You. You Pure, Free, Forever. I Pure, Free, Forever. And I say that you have the ability and strength to say, “I Pure, Free, Forever.” The moment you say, “I am the body,” you got mixed and defeated. I Pure, Free, Forever. That becomes your word. The phrase is Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum, Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum, I Pure, Free, Forever, Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum.

Here, time does not reach, space does not reach. That’s why these are our findings, our conclusion. This is our ultimate objective to reach, which would take millions of years to reach without information; thus you would not get the result of it and your consciousness or mind would not be filled with such a sense that “I am Immortal, Unchanging, Undying, Unborn.” Since it has no name and it cannot be compared to anything but itself, so it is called self-effulgence. You should not mind your thoughts coming and going, because you are now self-effulgent Being. Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum. I say these words, because in the future they will be there for you to practise. Remember the translation: I Pure, Free, Forever. I Pure, Free, Forever. I Pure, Free, Forever. I Pure, Free, Forever. I Pure, Free, Forever. It’s not my language. It’s not a religion. It’s not a story. It’s your own Sense. Sense is knowledge and Sense never dies. This is what you love. Anybody who has this Sense, this Life, you love him. Why? You love your Life.

This is a very secret science, but you are lucky enough to have it. I am speaking about it. You haven’t asked a single thing, yet I spoke. You never ask clouds to shower, but they shower. And they never need anything from you to throw on them or to give them back. That Space is the Highest. The Highest means, I Pure, Free, Forever. You Pure, Free, Forever. He Pure, Free, Forever. She Pure, Free, Forever. Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum. [Meditation.]

You open your eyes and know that whatever you have experienced in meditation is enough for you. Like you take a dip in the Ganges, it is remembered forever. Its effect is forever. You have been burned once, you remember it forever. You have closed your eyes and reached There where you have no words to describe—but it is there. That is what You are. But when you write a thesis, then you say your name is this, your father’s name is this, your qualities are this, you sing in this way, you have this home—you describe everything when you write a thesis. But it is all theory. This was a practical dip that you have taken in your Being, the ocean of your Life invisible, indivisible, Amaram Hum Madhuram Hum. …

Everybody is born with a pure Space, where there is no division. At that time, when you were a child, you could not say, “I am Canadian”—or Indian, French, English, Australian, a New Zealander, or someone from any country. You were not even able to recognize what your mother spoke, which means that you were totally innocent in your awareness regarding what the differentiation of the objective world was. You were knowing Pure, Free, and just the same forever—as long as childhood was there. But the moment that name was given, the division started. Name is totally against and opposite to form. You see gold, and there is no ring, there is all gold. But the moment you are given the name “ring,” the knowledge of gold is lost. So the human mind is very easily capable of knowing that which is false. And he does not know that which is real. If he became accustomed, fashioned, and crystallized to know falsity and to call it real, then it is not easy for anybody—whether a teacher, Guru, master, friend, brother, or sister—to change his crystallized state of awareness. And he dies.

He dies ignorant of the Reality. The body remains over here. But that which was the mind’s knowing-power again takes another birth according to that which he had learned. So those who were mathematicians in their last incarnations are mathematicians now also. …Those who were conditioned in their relations and relatives, they are still conditioned here. So the action of your previous lifetime with name, which means with mind, makes you this being of this lifetime. If you think that the result of your previous actions are not conducive to you, there is a possibility that you have full power to replace them, change them, or undo them. That’s why a human being is a very important person, because he has the ability to unfold more power of goodness that goes against that power which makes a person bad, or looking bad, or such that he does all wrong things. So there are shoobh and ashoobh: shoobh is towards that which is Unchanging—you do any action, but if it results in the awareness of the Unchanging, that is good company and good action. And if you do any action and the result of it is towards change, things, forms, thoughts, and ideas which are dying and changing, treat it that you are caught in it and you will suffer the whole life and for many, many other lives. …

The word “incarnation” creates delusion and you get deluded. The water that flows from Vyaas Kund, or the source of the Vyaas river at Rohtang pass, is coming from there. Water over here does not have a previous incarnation over there. It’s the same water. Therefore, telling you your previous, present, or future incarnation creates difficulty for you, for then you cannot work, you become a fatalist, or anything like that. We are in modern times and we are the life at this time. We have come to know the difficulty of the language that people have spoken and which has made us further confused. … Recognition is of the Self. And the Self is forever. It is not the current or previous form or body of an incarnation, because we have never been the body. So this is the unfoldment of your awareness. …

John saw me, and he was very happy and giggling. He went to England to see his grandson, leaving Devdhan over here and telling him, “I’ll come.” But reaching over there, his heart failed [and he passed]. Yet he will recognize Me—wherever he will be, his soul will recognize. That means he is with Me. Because I have gone to him so much. All those people who are here and who have seen me, they will recognize Me. So when you recognized Me, it means that you knew Me. I knew You. Then I have not to introduce myself that, “You recognize Me.” So in this way, those who have realized and identified the Self, they will recognize the Self in every being. That is recognition. …

The death of someone does not get you wrapped up, does not hold you with rope, or threads, or chains. In the same way, alive people cannot wrap you up. They cannot catch you. Like you have seen, many of you had your friends and relations. They either left you and went to Australia, or they died. But you are still there. In the same way, how many thoughts did you make appear, or you initiated. They couldn’t get you wrapped up. They couldn’t catch you. You are still there to initiate other thoughts. That shows that neither the physical reality of a form can get you or involve you, nor the subtler formation of your thoughts—which is what you know— can catch you. So then you are not attached. You are totally unattached. You are not thinking that “I am doing this.” No result of your actions will ever bind you, because you are totally free. When you identify “That I am,” then you have realized. Then you can feel that you are somewhat useful for your friends, for your people, for your countrymen, for all those people who are suffering only from this little ignorance that they do not know that they are Free. You have to let them know, “You are That: Pure, Free, Forever. Nothing—neither time nor space nor anything in it—can ever bind You. So why do you feel bondage?” That is the possibility. …

How simple it is. You close your eyes and you know your Self. After that, if you have any intelligence, then you will figure out that, “Swamiji, you told me that I close my eyes and I know that this is what I am. But my attachment to …[so and so] is just the same. And you say that if you know your Self, you will be free.” Then we will start appealing to you, or making you unfold more awareness, and you will know how attachment took place. Although the Self is there, but attachment took place. You will ask, “I am the Self, but why does the Self bother me?” Right? So how does the Self bother the Self? To know this depends on the sharpness and purity of your understanding. Otherwise you can say, “Well, I can see the Self, yet I remain bound.” That again is compromise. Whereas the promise or truth is being given to you that when you die and both husband and wife are burned, then they are nothing but ashes; even their bones are burned. This is the experience of everyone. Those who have gone to Banares see it daily: they live in a hotel, they are eating and drinking, and someone is being burned. You daily hear of people dying. That means you should know that “I am the one who is so detached that nothing happens to me although I have heard that ten or twenty people have died.”

But the same person, when his own friend dies, cannot figure out why it is that he has died, why thousands of people died due to the earthquake. … So what is that which affects you? It has nothing to do with seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, or touching—or thinking. Now, since it is deeper, I should ask you, How do you get attached, feel influenced, or feel bad? This is a human being. Which means, you reduce a human being to the mind. You say that the mind is inside the head, or somewhere here [indicating the body]. Each one will say this. Right? So the jug will say, “The space is here, in me.” The jug cannot say, “I am in the space,” because it does not see the space. So we cannot say, “I’m in the heart of God,” or “I’m in the heart of the Space” or “I’m in the heart of Infinite Existence”—subtler than anything you have seen or known.

That is itself one Reality. But the moment that water makes a wave arise, the wave says, “I am separate.” That Space, as soon as it makes the consciousness arise, vaasanaa arise, then you are caught up in it and ask, “From where does vaasanaa arise? I have to dig it.” So vaasanaa alone is now, which means that the mind alone is, and all the bodies are in the mind— not the mind is in the body. So if all the bodies are in the mind, then the mind alone is the reality. Then there is no body. But this will appeal to an intelligent person. All are of dull intellect. They stop thinking here. They say, “No, no, don’t digress, Swamiji. Don’t say this. I cannot stretch my imagination. I am limited over here. I can’t understand that the jug is in the space. I only know that the space is in the jug.”

So Guru says this knowing that you can understand that the space is all over, the jug is in between, and the jug is just a little tiny existence in such a vast space. Then you say, “Well, I really say that the jug is concrete and the space is not. So how should I say that the jug is in the middle of the space?” Thinking that you cannot understand, then we make an earthen jug, without getting it baked. And in front of your eyes—because I have to unfold your understanding, expand your mind, get you convinced of it, because I know the faculty is there—I bring a big tub full of water and ask you, “Do you see the jug?” Yes, you answer. “Do you see space?” Yes. “So then, put this jug in the tub.” With your hand, you put the jug in the tub. You have open eyes and are watching. In half an hour I ask, “Where is the jug? Where is your ring?” You are quiet. This system exists in your head. So where and who became ignorant of the formation of the jug, the presence of the jug, the solidity of the jug, the use of the jug, the value of the jug, the buying or selling of the jug? Who was having raag or attachment for the jug, and now where is that where raag has gone, which means where did freedom take place? This sort of raag is always taken into consideration in satsang, that it should be eliminated. When raag is gone, you are free. …

A human being feels he should not be attached or ignorant. But he does not cooperate so that, with his cooperation, examination, work, or vichaar, ignorance should be eliminated. Vichaar means that light should shine. It should shine as a lamp shines and we begin to see things. But what is the lamp in your head? That is your intellect. So if the intellect is not sharpened or made into a purified flame, then the Infinite Being will not shine in your heart. And that’s the only intelligence which can see. So this intelligence is an eye of understanding that will know that that which I call I is actually an infinite field of Existence that is finer than the sky. It can be realized. I can give you the possibility. And it is up to you whether you get along or not.

Your body lies dead. It has no raag or dwaysh [attachment or aversion], no understanding or half understanding, no disease, sickness or anything. The body is only body. Which means that the body is not the cause of your misunderstanding. And the Self, the Infinite Being, has no fault or darkness in its eyes. So the body is free and the Self is free. But this parasite, which is the human mind, is making birth, death, disease, sickness, worry, happiness, unhappiness, less happiness, more happiness, weakness, more weakness, and confusion. This parasite is to be dissolved in the way that the form of an earthen jug is dissolved in water: form is not, so the human mind, which is a form, is not. Body is not a form. You’ve seen that the body can be burned. And after death, the Self, whatever is there, has nothing to do with burning or not. But with this mind, which you think is there, you say, “I am … [so and so].” The body never says this. When you are asleep, the deep sleep-being does not say this. So this “I am … [so and so], a form with name, and then memories, and all that” has been introduced in a human nervous system at the time he was born. That is why the world has been like this for millions of years. It will continue in this way for millions of years. Nobody will succeed in dissolving it. This is your illusory sense which was never there—I say. But you say, “No, it is now, not only then. It is now, Swamiji. It is there. I’m afraid. Either you are wrong, or I’m not able to understand.”

Then we dig the means to make your understanding expanded and purified, and for that there is only one means, which is meditation. … It’s a personal work, an individual work. … Millions of gurus came on earth, but they couldn’t change the tail of a dog. It shakes that way, all the time. But the dog can do it. If the dog doesn’t want to shake his tail, he can do it. A human being can make the mind still. Provided he has listened that he has the power to. That power is knowledge. That power is not ignorance. Ignorance is against knowledge and knowledge is against ignorance. And both are there in a human being. … We can use the word attachment. But I say this because you have experienced attachment. … What is this mechanism? We cannot explain it. But the mechanism is there. It is there, it has come, in any way it has come, but only one thing is assured: it can be removed. …

Guru says you are Pure, Free, Forever. That is where I say you have the ability to practise it and to check your brain: what happens to you. Practise this, with closed eyes: “I really am whatever Swamiji says—Pure, Free, Forever. Pure, Free, Forever. And I have not to worry about anything.” For five, ten, or twenty minutes, or for half an hour, just practise knowing you are Pure, Free, Forever. … Self Realization. If your attention is on the intellect, you will never get it. If your attention is on Pure, Free, Forever [he snaps his fingers], you are There. That power is hidden within everyone. Whoever can use it is happy. Thank you. ...
